A fleet-metier based approach of the small scale fishing activity in the French West Indies ArchiMer
Guyader, Olivier; Reynal, Lionel; Demaneche, Sebastien; Berthou, Patrick; Daures, Fabienne.
The development of the ecosystemic approach for fisheries supposes to improve integrated analysis of fisheries by considering the biological as well as the socio-economic dimensions of the exploitation. A prerequisite for integrated analysis is the improvement in the knowledge of fleets structure, fleet evolution and allocation of fishing effort in the different fisheries. However, small scale fisheries are often characterized by a lack of knowledge on the vessel fishing activity. This paper first presents a data collection methodology recently applied in the French West (Guadeloupe and Martinique) for the follow up of the whole vessel population. Based on a statistical analysis of these data sets, the paper develops a fleet-metier matrix giving the...

A GIS interface to the French Fisheries Information System of Ifremer ArchiMer
Harscoat, Valerie; Leblond, Emilie; Treguer, Mickael; Berthou, Patrick.
The Fisheries Information System of Ifremer aims to build an operational and multidisciplinary monitoring network for scientific purposes, allowing a comprehensive view of fishery systems including their biological, technical, environmental and economical components. One of its objectives consists in elaborating and providing data and indicators for a widespread public (researchers, fishermen, administration, general public…), including bio-economic diagnostics and assessment of the short and long-term impacts of fisheries management scenario and measures. To further an integrated analysis of the fishery systems, the wide range kinds of data (landings, efforts, biological or environmental observations, economic data…) are managed in a single data...

Demaneche, Sebastien; Berthou, Patrick; Le Blond, Samuel; Begot, Eric; Weiss, Jerome.

Berthou, Patrick; Chevaillier, P; Jezequel, Michele.
Introduction: Setting up a policy of coastal fisheries management goes through a preliminary stage of understanding the dynamics of the fishing fleets as much as their tactics. Small fleets, such as those of the Côtes d'Armor, are characterised by: - the boats' home ports are scattered widely, - the heterogeneousness of the types of vessels and fishing gear used, - the versatility of the fishing units, - the plurispecificity of the exploited resource, - the flexibility of operating strategies, that is, the fishing owners' ability to change occupation. However, this flexibility is limited by the availability of the resource, by the market, by the investments granted (boats, fishing materiel), as well as by "cultural" context and know-how. This...

Caractéristiques de dragues et pêcheries ArchiMer
Pitel, Mathilde; Berthou, Patrick; Fifas, Spyros.
Basically, a dredge is a bottom-towed gear and consists of a metal frame with a blade or teeth, to dig into the sediment and extract the shelled molluscs, and a mesh bag to collect the catch. Whereas hand dredging is observed on some intertidal beds (Donax trunculus in France), the use of dredge generally needs a fishing boat. There is a great diversity of dredge types, with specific designs used to target different species in particular beds: Manual dredges for Donax (Donax trunculus), Warty venus (Venus verrucosa) and clams (Venerupis pulastra, Ruditapes sp) Dredges for King scallops (Pecten maximus) Dredges for Warty venus (Venus verrucosa) Dredge for Queen scallops (black and white, Chlamys varia and Chlamys opercularia) Dredges for small...

Noel, Philippe; Blanchard, Michel; Berthou, Patrick.
During 1993 and 1994, quantitative sampling were realized in Norman Gulf (Western Channel) to estimate molluscs suspension-feeders. Four bivalves are regularly sampled : Spisula ovalis, Tapes rhomboides, Glycymeris glycymeris and Venus verrucosa. For each species, individual age and weight were noticed. The spreading gastropod Crepidula fornicata was also sampled. The resultant biomass and distribution are proposed. These results will contribute to the evaluation of trophic exchanges in boundary layer and to the proposed modeling, in the program PNOC (National Program for Coastal Oceanography). This work is the result of collaboration between the English, French, Channel Isles and Belgian laboratories which are involved in a study of the English Channel. Its subject is the activities of fleets and fleet interactions, and it complements other work on the biogeographical identification of Channel fish and shellfish stocks (published), and on modelling the fleets' interactions as they exploit the resources (in preparation). The concept of a métier is defined as being the use of one fishing gear to catch one or several species targeted during a particular season in a given area. On this basis, 74 métiers were identified during 1989-90. For each métier we give a brief description of the catching gear, the target species and most usual by-catch, the...

Juvenile lobsters were reared for 8 months individually in separate tanks in order to obtain separate estimates of growth. Five batches were studied separately according to the type of diet : deep-frozen krill, paste, ¿try pellets and moist pellets. Growth data were collected over 15 first molt stages for each type of prepared diet. Observations deal with size and weight increments at moult and with weight/length relationships. Regression of total lengths over carapace lengths were fitted in each case.

Decommissioning schemes and capacity adjustment: A preliminary analysis of the French experience ArchiMer
Guyader, Olivier; Berthou, Patrick; Daures, Fabienne.
The French decommissioning aims at permanently removing vessels from the fishing fleet according to European Union rules laid down within the Common Fisheries Policy. A system of premiums established by the French government is supposed to give the vessel-owners, the incentives to get rid of their fishing unit. This paper details the rules for the applicants and their evolution and it provides a preliminary analysis of the impact of these schemes over the 1991-2001 period. Special attention is paid to the characteristics of decommissioned vessels and of their owners. The problem of windfall gains of these policies is approached, and a first assessment is given. The consequences in terms of capacity adjustment are discussed according to the Multi Annual...

Drogou, Mickael; Biseau, Alain; Berthou, Patrick; Leblond, Samuel; Pitel-roudaut, Mathilde.

Early stages of snapper-grouper exploitation in the Caribbean (Bay Islands, Honduras) ArchiMer
Gobert, Bertrand; Berthou, Patrick; Lopez, E; Lespagnol, Patrick; Turcios, Maria Dolores Oqueli; Macabiau, Christophe; Portillo, Pedro.
In the Caribbean, snappers (Lutjanidae) and groupers (Serranidae) are often heavily exploited by artisanal or industrial fisheries. This paper analyzes the catches of an artisanal fishery selectively targeting these species with a moderate fishing pressure in the Bay Islands (Honduras), and discusses the implications on the understanding of the early stages of development of reef fisheries. Although snappers and groupers are targeted with handlines and spearguns in the whole archipelago, the differences in species diversity and size structure of the catch reveals various exploitation patterns. In most areas, a depletion is observed for the most vulnerable snapper and grouper species, and most other species are mainly exploited in their juvenile phase;...
